The Bible says that as believers we are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. Matthew 5:13
So the Bible calls us to be both the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Today we will talk about salt and in another post we will talk about light. A few known reasons why salt is important: it adds flavor and preserves but salt also enhances color, it is an essential nutrient for the systems of our body to work properly and it even adds texture.
The phrase you are the salt of the earth really made a loud sound in my mind a little while ago. At the beginning of January Covid made its unwelcomed entry into my household. ??
Thank the Lord we only experienced mild symptoms!
After a few days of what I thought was only a cold, I could no longer taste or smell anything. I could not taste sweet, spicy, sour, I could not smell perfume or candles, it was a very odd experience. However, as I was sipping on some bone broth and eating popcorn (I know weird combo ?) I realized I could still taste salt. It is the one flavor I could still taste and the verse you are the salt of the earth came to mind.
I look out into the world as there are people fighting about everything really…. Politics, personal opinions, religion, vaccines, masks, you name it and there are people arguing over it. Whether Christian or not everyone seems to be making their stand. If we think about the world today many people seem to be living in a gray area. They have a mentality of: well that is good for you and this is good for me, I can do this with my life and you can do that, I’m not wrong, you’re not wrong, we both can be right. There is also a flip side where people point fingers at everyone around them and vocalize how wrong everyone else is, without taking a minute to figure out how they can improve and base their opinion solidly on scripture or remove the plank of sin in their own eye before they attack someone else. They are casting stones, fighting and arguing all day long.
I want us to consider something, with all the flavors of opinions out there have we blended together and become tasteless? Does the world see you as someone who loves Jesus and can taste and see your saltiness? Or have you become a muted tasteless flavor in the mix of all the others?
We are called to be salt. We are called as a Christian to be Distinctly Distingished between all the other flavors, opinions and arguments that are muddled together. The world should be able to point to us and say something is different about him or her and I want to know what that is.
One reason we are the salt of the earth is because we are called to tell others about Jesus and if we share the gospel with others then we are not just simply fulfilling a calling but we are preserving– one of the main purposes of salt. The salt of salvation preserves and saves lives as people turn to Christ and are able to live forever in glory. Salt is an essential nutrient for the body to live and function properly just as Salvation is essential for every person to have eternal life in Christ .
Because we are called by God to share the good news of the gospel and be the salt then our job on this earth is essential. At the beginning of Covid we were all wondering if our job was essential or not or if we would be working from home, unemployed or headed out in masks and gloves. I am here to tell you that the role of a Christian to be salt and share the gospel is always essential because Christ is essential.
Proclaiming Him in your actions, words and deeds allows for the salt to be spread, recognized and ‘tasted’ by others.
If salt loses its flavor it is useless as the passage says, and it may as well be trampled on the ground. I’m not sure about you but I do not like the way that sounds.
Let’s not let Jesus be trampled on the ground because no one sees Him or experiences Him but instead let’s be sure the world Tastes and Sees that the Lord is good and they can take refuge in Him.
So Be Salty! Be the salt of the earth! Sprinkle God’s love over the entire earth, in your community, in your family, in your church, in your workplace, in your day to day interactions, in your social media posts, in your lifestyle, so others who come in contact with you can taste the goodness of God and the blessing of salvation.
The Lord Bless you and Keep you,
Kara
